The above piece is called Joy of Life and was painted by Henri Matisse in 1905. As I was preparing to print this piece for a Matisse calendar, I sent a proof to Matisse’s grandson, Georgé Matisse, in Paris to approve color. He replied by say, in French, that “when one looks at this artwork, it should make then feel as if they were sucking on a lemon.” I had to decide if that meant more yellow or less magenta. In the end all were happy with the printed piece and can taste a bit of that lemon.

The above two covers are part of a 4 books series on Hawaii that I wrote and photographed for Indian Chief Travel Guides. At that time I was playing bass for a reggae band, The Shakers, based on Kauai.
